Rising Sun Black Tea
Rising Sun Black Tea
ORGANIC FIRST FLUSH MINAMI SAYAKA WAKOUCHA
Origin: Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan
Net Weight: 50g | 1.8oz
Servings: 20 cups | re-steep for up to 60-80 cups
Our Notes:
This rare Japanese tea is a reflection of our love in tea form. Japan is known for its legendary green teas, but fewer people know of 和紅茶 (Wa-kou-cha), which translates to "Japanese black tea." This one comes from Miyazaki Prefecture on southern Japan’s Kyushu Island, a beautiful place known for its beaches and oceanside drives. The name "Minami Sayaka" translates to "bright and vivid of the south," and the cultivar has a diverse heritage of Indian, Caucasian, and Japanese ancestry, so it immediately felt like the right choice to embody the concept of Pangea. It is also "first flush," which in tea lingo means it is the first tea of the season, picked in mid-May. Compared to the black tea you may be used to, it has a subdued aroma reminiscent of gardenia flowers, a body akin to green tea, and a soft, fruity, and fresh taste that transports you to the Japanese tropics.
About the Farmer
About the Farmer
(Farmer wishes to remain anonymous)
The farmer's tea gardens, in a village nestled in the mountains at high altitude, have been producing tea in Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu Island since the 1920s, with organic cultivation beginning in the 1980s. His motto is "tea that invigorates you when you drink it," and as the leader of the village's tea industry, he has found his Ikigai (a Japanese concept referring to something that gives a person a sense of purpose, a reason for living). His craft is in constantly researching which cultivars are the best for each tea type, every year aiming to produce tea leaves that are better than the last.
